Indeed, the "failed to read header" is an error message which isn't really fatal. It is unfortunate that it even comes out. It does, however, indicate that the server is not responding and is likely overloaded. The client makes several attempts to recover from this which is why you see the message repeated. The error message itself is generated by the xrootd client.
