Dear All,
Below please find the minutes from the eRHIC IR design mtg we held on April 14th.
Greetings,
Bill
We started the meeting with a general discussion about how people felt the recent eRHIC Design Validation review went, and any ideas on how the group might want to re focus efforts based on the review. Below is a collection of comments from this discussion.
- Bob felt the review went well.
- The committee commented many times that the high bunch number, high current operation appeared challenging.
- Elke felt that the presentations and the review was very good. The committee was very engaged and constructive, and offered advice that should be taken seriously.
- Comments that a lot of the points that came up were also applicable to JLAB, but that we can't push some perhaps not likely realizable ideas just because JLAB seems to.
- The high luminosity parameters are likely not realizable (short bunch length high current).
- No particular concerns expressed by the committee about the IR design.
- Reminder that the high luminosity needs the low Pt acceptance.
- Discussion and general conclusion that the eRHIC Science program does not need the "High Luminosity". The maximum luminosity needed for the program is on the order of 3 x 10**33.
- We need to study the effect of the detector solenoid on the beam coupling.
- Need to match the IR lattice design to the ring lattice.
- Question of whether the first magnet on the outgoing electron side can be brought closer to the IR.
- Perhaps we should start looking into the detector design more.
- Question about how detailed a specification is needed for the IR solenoid before the IR design can proceed to completion.
- The beam pipe design through the IR is a topic we should work on in the near term.
- The next level of magnet design may need a room temperature pipe for the outgoing electron beam. What cooling should this pipe have?
- Where do the vacuum pumps have to be located through out the IR?
- Elke would like to know more about what the spectrometer magnet looks like, size? beampipe?
After this general discussion and comments regarding the review, we discussed what the agenda topics for the next meeting. We settled n:
- Detector beam pipe design requirements, which would leads to specifications, and hopefully soon a "cartoon" for the vacuum pipe/chamber.
- A simulation status update/discussion.
The next meeting is scheduled for 3 pm on Friday, April 28th.
End of meeting.
