Postdoctoral position: STAR Cold QCD analysis and AI studies for high-granularity calorimeter for the EIC

Job description:
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Riverside invites applications to conduct research in experimental nuclear and particle physics.

The appointed individuals will work on the following projects (~half time on each):
  • Analysis of polarized proton data taken by the RHIC-STAR experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
  • R&D for the forward calorimetry system for the EIC project detector in collaboration with the California EIC consortium. In particular, to work on AI-driven reconstruction and optimization algorithms for high-granularity calorimeter insert. Work will include, but is not limited, to the use of GNN-based regression, generative models, and other state-of-the-art techniques.
The UCR STAR Cold-QCD group is working on the analysis of polarized proton data with the forward detectors and recently installed STAR Forward Upgrade. The candidate(s) will work on the analysis of data taken with the forward upgrade data (Run 21 and beyond) and help supervise the students in the group. The candidate would work half the time on R&D for a high-granularity calorimeter insert, which is led by our group. Travel to LBNL or LLNL is expected in the context of our AI projects. People with experience in imaging calorimetry (CALICE, CMS HGCAL, etc) are welcome to apply, although this is not a requirement.

The candidate working on STAR will be supervised by Ken Barish, and those working on the EIC projects will be co-supervised by Miguel Arratia and Ken Barish. The UCR medium energy group also works closely with UCR's heavy-ion group, which is led by Rich Seto.

The candidate is expected to be in residence at BNL with visits to California, but there is flexibility depending on the exact work plan.

Applicants should submit a resume highlighting personal research achievements, a list of publications where your contributions were significant, and a statement of research interests to Kenneth.Barish AT ucr.edu and miguel.arratia AT ucr.edu. In addition, the applicant should arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be sent to the emails above. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
