Dear Colleagues

During the meeting today we discussed general updates and plans for the ePIC collaboration meeting. I will have a presentation during joint nHCAL+LFHCAL workfest on Thursday:

https://indico.bnl.gov/event/20727/sessions/7436/#20240725

Followed by reconstruction software hackaton. This will be a good time to make progress on track-cluster matching etc.

1. Subhadip plans to present a poster on 2-track position resolution study - please send it to us in advance before printing, so that we can review it. He also was able to simulate 2 particles per event.
2. Alexandr will be away for 2 weeks in July. He plans to have a remote self-nominated presentation or position resolution study (please correct me and send the title). I forwarded the original message from John, so please write to John and include me in CC.
3. Vincent+Caroline: please check basic rapidity distribution (and pT) of vector mesons (rho, phi, J/psi, etc) with decays into muons with pure PYTHIA in a few cases:
a) all min-bias events - reference
b) In acceptance of barrel HCal
c) backward HCal
d) LFHCAL
e) combination of backward+barrel
d) combination of forward+barrel
f) combination of backward+forward
4. Brian with help of Anne will obtain jet energy resolution vs. jet energy and pT for charged and neutral jets with tracks only and with nHCal included (Brian indicated he is busy now, so it would be good to have it for the collaboration meeting).
5. David didn't participate this time, but he indicated to me some time ago, that he is overwhelmed with other projects now

This will cover all the cases. For backward HCal, we can assume -4.14<eta<-1.18 as the widest coverage. The precise numbers are found in the development document under "4.1 Acceptance" section. It's posted here along with a read-only link to the work in progress document:

https://wiki.bnl.gov/EPIC/index.php?title=Backward_Hcal#Documents

Since time is short and we have holidays planned, please be ready with updates on your progress next week. At least to get it started and make changes as the meeting approaches. We need to start posting slides to Indico for future reference.

Best regards, Leszek

Dear Colleagues

For your information, I fixed the rotated segmentation and created a pull request:

Dear Colleagues

We are going to have a DSC meeting on Friday at 1000h. Here's the link:

Please let me know if you have updates, so that I can prepare time slots for you. We need to make progress before ePIC collaboration meeting, so I expect major updates next week on 28.7.2024. For your information, I will be on holidays 5-13.7.2024, so the last meeting before ePIC meeting is on 19.7.2024.

We also have an additional modification on the muon study with vector mesons. First thing we need to see are basic distributions from PYTHIA of vector mesons eg. rapidity, pT etc. when muons are in acceptance of central detectors, backward HCal(-4.14<eta<-1.18) and both. This will tell us the fraction of vector mesons, which can be detected with backward HCal. Also we need to demonstrate the improvement in acceptance and efficiency when backward HCal is included. Please use pure PYTHIA for this.

Dear Colleagues

We had a short meeting today where we discussed the tasks for UIUC with Caroline. Anne will help Brian with jet studies, while Caroline and Vincent will focus on muon ID for vector meson reconstruction.

Since we need to focus on obtaining the physics motivation plots, the plan is to use simple studies with MC information and later include more realistic cases with tracking and cluster matching. For jets, I suggested to produce jet energy resolution plot vs. jet energy or pT. These need to demonstrate the impact of using nHCal vs. no nHCal. Brian also offered to send his script for writing of HepMC3 files to Subhadip and Alexandr.

Similarly for muon ID, we need to see the efficiency and purity of muon sample selected using nHCal vs. no nHCal. Another part will be to check the impact of including nHCal on vector meson reconstruction efficiency and acceptance. When the codes are ready, it should be easy to check the performance (purity) of scattered electron selection when using nHCal as a veto.

We also talked about possible use of backward HCal to determine DIS event kinematics. Charlotte from SIDIS WG showed on slide 7 that electron method works better than Jaquet-Blondel (using all hadronic final states instead of electron):

There are some small improvements at high-y and low-Q^2 though. Maybe we can revisit that. Details on the method can be found here:

For those who could not participate, I got your messages, and I'm sorry for the sudden change. Please send me updates via email.

Dear Colleagues

Looks like we have to shift the meeting a bit earlier and start at 0900h. Let me know if you have any conflicts or contact me via email.

Sorry for the late notification. This is the best solution for now that we can work with.

Dear Colleagues

We are going to have a next DSC meeting on Friday at 0900h or 1000h. Here's the link:

I'm going to have a training at that time, so Daniel will replace me. Otherwise we will have to shift the meeting a bit earlier to 0900h BNL time. The plan is to finalize the task division plan and make sure we prepare for the ePIC collaboration meeting. Here are the priorities for now:

1. Muon ID - Vincent expressed interest
2. Jet study with neutrals - 1 person to help Brian
3. Position resolution - 1 person to help Alexandr (may be shared with track-cluster matching)
4. Track-cluster matching - 1 person to help

Please let me know via email if you have something to add or any questions.

Dear Colleagues

We had a short meeting today with the focus on discussing tasks to be ready by the collaboration meeting. The discussion was short, so we plan to coordinate with UIUC group via email as well as next week. So far here are the tasks:

1. Muon ID - Vincent expressed interest
2. Jet study with neutrals - 1 person to help Brian
3. Position resolution - 1 person to help Alexandr (may be shared with track-cluster matching)
4. Track-cluster matching - 1 person to help

There is a Mattermost discussion and some examples how to use the HepMC3 files or GPS to create 2 particles in an event. This should be helpful for 2-particle resolution study.

Please also register to the mailing list. In this way we could switch to mailing list only communication.

I also have a few starting points for the software (see my tutorial in attachment) and links here:

https://github.com/lkosarz/ePICSimDataAnalysisTest (code for analysis of simulation output)
https://github.com/lkosarz/ePICcondorScripts (scripts for condor batch system at BNL SDCC)

Feel free to ask any questions.

Dear Colleagues

Sorry for late notification. We are going to have a short DSC meeting tomorrow at 1000h. We haven't followed up with the planning for the UIUC group to join the current effort. Now, the priority is to prepare an update for the ePIC collaboration meeting. Below are the topics we need help with now.

1. Muon ID - 1 person
2. Jet study with neutrals - 1 person to help Brian
3. Position resolution - 1 person to help Alexandr (may be shared with track-cluster matching)
4. Track-cluster matching - 1 person to help

Let's discuss it tomorrow. I can provide tutorials and assistance to get going with the software side. Here are the links:

Please let me know if you have any updates too, so I can update the agenda.

Dear Colleagues

We had only short DSC meeting today. We discussed a few points:

1. We should join the LFHCAL workfest - waiting for confirmation from Friederike, we can maybe have 1-2 presentations there
2. Position resolution study should focus on the 2-particle resolution for now - additional person may be needed for help
3. Check 2. first, then add track-cluster matching
4. Brian had an idea to check smaller jet radius to see if it can flatten the jet resolution vs. eta dependence. 1 extra person may be needed to help
5. Different response of HCal to pions and neutrons - lower sampling fraction needed for neutrons. We need to understand it better
6. Anne and others were busy with sPHENIX collaboration meeting, so couldn't join this time

Dear Colleagues

Let's have our regular DSC meeting on Friday at 1000h. Here's the link and Indico page:

We need to discuss plans in preparation for the collaboration meeting (workfest, presentations, organization):

I also added update from David on ML studies, but please confirm if you can give an update.

I think we can start having scheduled updates. Please, let me know in advance if you have slides to show. In this way I can create an entry on Indico, where you can upload your slides.

Best regards, Leszek
