Hello, EV users
Two great items of news I'd like to bring to your attention today:
Item 1) Charging stations
A) You may or may not be aware that new Level 2 charging stations have been installed onsite in 4 locations: in front of Bldgs. 555 (Chemistry), 744 (the southwestern NSLS II LOB), 734 (ISB), and 464 (DOE site office - DOE use only!). Each of
these is a 2-port station capable of delivering 6.2 kW of power, if I understand correctly, over the two ports. If only 1 port is in use, that port will get the full 6.2 kW, but if both ports are in use, the power will be split between the ports (each station
should be accessible from 2 parking spots). Details of the fees for using these chargers will be given later, but the latest I heard was that this will transpire via ChargePoint (and users would need an account). I do not have a date yet for when these will
become active. Please stay tuned for more details!
B) The vendor for the charging stations will be on site next Friday, September 18th, and will hold a demonstration for usage of the stations at 2pm in front of Bldg. 555 (I plan to be there). Brigitte Kimble set up an Outlook invitation for the
demonstration, but I'm not sure how to forward on the Outlook invite. If you want to attend, I'd be happy to collect names and pass them along to Brigitte.
C) I expect the existing program using the Level 1 outlets to continue, as demand for charging will likely still exceed what even the new Level 2 chargers will provide. But we'll have to see how it goes.
Item 2) PSEG LI rebates
I brought attention last year on this list to the PSEG rebates for installing a smart home charging station. I will copy and paste that below. But there is news on this if you have installed one of their approved stations: you can receive $0.05/kWh
back on your electricity bill for any charging you do between 11pm and 6am. Apparently, they will reimburse you for any such charging you did going back to April 1, 2020 if you were already part of their smart home charging program (I have yet to see the $
back on my bill as I just signed up earlier this week). Here is their link (BTW, this site worked in Google Chrome for me, but did work properly in my Safari web browser):
That's the news!

Last year's rebates:
_____
For those unaware (as I was until someone tipped me off - thanks, Jamie), PSEG has instituted a $500 rebate for certain home Level 2 charging stations (actually, EVSEs to get the terminology correct) as of last month for the remainder or 2019:
https://www.psegliny.com/saveenergyandmoney/solarrenewableenergy/ev/smartcharge
https://www.psegliny.com/saveenergyandmoney/solarrenewableenergy/ev/smartcharge
The rebate only applies to a specific list of equipment that must connect to WiFi and allow PSEG to monitor your usage. If you are interested in a JuiceBox model from Emotorwerks, you can get an additional $15 off the price by using my referral (full disclosure: I get $15 too if you do):
http://emotorwerks.refr.cc/genevanburen
I want to make sure that everyone is also aware that there is also a 50% income tax credit on such equipment from the state of New York:
https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/credits/alt_fuels_elec_vehicles.htm
My reading of this is that anything you spend _over_ the $500 you get back on the PSEG rebate is eligible for the 50% tax credit. And if you don't use the rebate at all (or missed out on it), you should still be able to use this tax credit for the equipment cost.
