Dear Gene and EV Users,
Great news on more chargers – I haven’t been using the lab chargers as much in the last couple of months since I got a L2 at home since the super off-peak rates from PSEGLI are around $13c/kwh.
I have some colleagues who are considering an EV/PHEV but due to lack of inventory at local dealerships cannot get a test drive, would some of the EV owners at BNL be willing to give tours or test drives of their vehicles? If so can I direct them to send email this list if they are interested in a particular car? Maybe we could also try to organize a showcase day when it gets warmer.
(2019 Chevy Bolt)
Cheers,

Hi, EV users
In addition to forwarding to this list this note from the administrator of the Lab's charging program and the message it conveys about respecting other users and their access to the charging stations, I want to highlight two items:
1) If it is inconvenient for you to leave work to move your vehicle to/from a charging station, then the Level 1 charging option may indeed be a better match for your situation. I think some people believe the Level 1 charging program to be expensive because of its one-price-for-all arrangement, but if it used al day for at least 2-3 days of each week, then it is actually less expensive than the Level 2 charging (which is roughly ~$0.19/kWh). You can adjust these numbers as you like, but roughly you get...
$17.56 / [(1.2 kW) x (8 hours/day) x (2.5 days/week) x (4 weeks/month)] = ~$0.18kWh (and you might draw higher than 1.2 kW or use it for more hours)
2) The news of an effort to bring additional charging stations is a big deal - I look forward to the continued program growth! Please keep in mind that this growth is also likely include charging for Labratory-owned vehicles, and that those vehicles would likely have priority. But given how difficult it has been to grow the program over the years, we should welcome what we can get!
Thanks, -Gene
