Subject: Institutional Computing Requirements

Dear all,

David and I have been asked by Jack Anderson to look again into institutional Computing for two specific purposes:

  • Data Storage/Management for staff and projects to comply with DOE’s data management plans
  • Provision of basic computing capabilities for staff to support their  research incl. LDRDs.

We are aware that some scientists have all their necessary basic resources either through their experiment (e.g. ATLAS) or Facility. However there are still a significant number that are struggling to obtain access to the needed computing resources. To right size any possible future computing service we would be grateful if you could provide us with estimates from your directorates for:

  • How many of your scientific and technical staff would benefit from access to a basic amount of central computing capabilities?
  • How many of your projects would benefit from a centralized data management service to support the implementation of their data management plans?

We would be grateful if you could send us responses by 9/15. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Best wishes,

David and Kerstin
