Hello,

I had a look, I am not sure we can write something reasonable and ATLAS related for the moment, I would think about a common NP/HEP joint R&D topic (with focus on EIC and HL-LHC, but for ASCR funding), it will take  more time to prepare. May be we should start a discussion within PH department to be ready for the next call (at least to identify topic(s) both communities are interested)

Cheers, Alexei

OK thanks. The feedback I gave her is that we are not going to generate a white paper plan out of thin air by Thursday morning (feel free to prove me wrong, I know Alexei for one could write one), which is fine because cultivating ASCR is what CSI is for, but we're open to helping strengthen the case of whatever the 3 BNL-originating ones are. I checked with Kerstin and your non BNL originating one isn't included in the count.

This is the FOA call I'm involved with for DUNE, BNL is not lead PI for that response but I'm trying to understand if this 3 white paper limit per lab applies?

Hi,
Two days to decide whether we want to submit a white paper, 3 days to submit an outline of it. We're supposed to look at the FOA call on the linked page

Dear all,

Thank you for showing an interest in submitting a white paper in response to this very late call notification. As we are limited to 3 white papers per lab, we have established a short review process. Please send a title, PI and collaborator information (external), and brief one paragraph summary of your idea to Nick D’Imperio no later than Thursday morning. Please also point out to which of the call topics your white paper would respond.

Best wishes,

Kerstin

Dear CRLC,

I’m writing to let you know about some operational changes to my areas of the computer science portfolio, and to ask for your help.

In lieu soliciting proposals through targeted solicitations every ~3 years, I have included areas of priority interest in data management, analysis, and visualization; in situ data management; and SSIO in the Office of Science Annual Funding Opportunity Announcement (aka, the “Open Call”). (https://science.osti.gov/ascr/Funding-Opportunities).   The purpose of this change is to allow for new research ideas to be proposed at any time, rather than just once every three years.

Although the Open Call is for financial assistance only, I invite lab researchers to submit white papers responsive to these topics, as detailed in the Open Call.  I will invite full proposals based on an internal review of the white papers.

Guidelines for what to include in a white paper are provided below.  Note that a signature from you (or your designee) is required.  This so that I know the proposed work has support from the lab.  In addition, I would like your help in limiting the number of white papers from each lab to a reasonable number (~3).  (Regarding renewals, I will be reaching out to those PI’s separately, so they are excluded from this count.)

White papers should include:

                     Title of the proposed activity

                     Date of submission

** Signature from CRLC member or designee**

Principal Investigator Name, Job Title, Institution

PI Phone Number, PI Email Address

For collaborative proposals, the name, job title, and institution for Co-PIs for each collaborating institution

Relevant topic area (or areas) from the Open Call

A clear and concise description of the objectives and technical approach of the proposed research. This description should not exceed two pages, with a minimum text font size of 11 point and margins no smaller than one inch on all sides. Figures and references, if included, must fit within the two-page limit.

Estimate of the cost and duration of the project.  This does not need to be broken out by institution.  Please be clear about whether the amounts are annual or for the entire project.

A list of the names and institutional affiliations of all participating investigators, including collaborators and consultants on the proposed project. For each funded investigator, provide a list of collaborative co-investigators including co-authors of the past 48 months, co-editors of the past 24-months, graduate and postdoctoral advisors/advisees, and close associations. This list of personnel and their potential conflicts of interest is not included in the two-page limit.

There is no deadline—topics in the open call usually do not change much from year to year—but, to be considered for FY 2020 funds, I would appreciate receiving white papers by the end of February and full proposals by the end of April.

Proposed work can be for collaborations with other labs, universities, or other institutions.  Only one white paper is needed for each collaboration.  If successful, I will advise about how proposals should be submitted from the various institutions.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

--Laura B.
