Hi Torre,

that really depends on the timescale. Right now Joe is the one who will get ACTS working for sPHENIX which is absolutely crucial and remember we asked for 5FTEs and got two [Joe and 1/2 of each Dmitri(y) at my last count]. This effort should also be inside BNL where CSI is just across the road and sharing is easier if it's within BNL-NPSS (under the aspect of cross pollination).

I do see some possible benefits for sPHENIX analysis, so I am not principally opposed to put Joe on this at a later stage but I think right now is a bad time. I think Alexanders suggestion to use a new hire is the way to go.

Hi Torre,

Berndt forwarded an inquiry from Frank Alexander looking for a BNL person to lead an AI/ML proposal.  The person that came to mind for me was Joe Osborn.  I haven't suggested his name to Frank because: one, he's in your group; and two, he's doing valuable for for sPHENIX and I'd hate to see that be impacted.  On the other hand, if the Lab is prioritizing these sorts of things it might eb worth a chat with Frank.  I really don't have anyone else with spare cycles to work on this.

Right. Maybe talk to Torre. This should really be done in the NPPS group; of course Joe is there too.

Hi Jamie,

I heard this back from Frank. It's a pretty heavy lift, especially with the sPHENIX schedule impacts stemming from the coronavirus response. One thought – Joe Osborn. Probably the right mix of expertise. I wouldn't want to distract him from the sPHENIX work he's doing, but it depends on what sort of priority the Lab want to put on initiatives like Frank is describing.

Hi Dave,
It’s actually someone from the physics side at BNL to lead the proposal which LBNL and BNL ML/AI folks would contribute to.
Sounds like that may be hard to find given workload?

Hi Frank,

I'm writing to find out a bit more about what sort of person you're looking for. Are you specifically looking for someone at BNL? Or would a non-BNL, but ML savvy, person in the sPHENIX collaboration be OK? The reason I ask is that if it needs to be someone at BNL that would mean going to our usual stable of people, and they're wildly oversubscribed. If it can be someone outside BNL we might be able to identify someone with the right know-how and a who also has a few spare cycles.

What’s the best response to Frank’s inquiry?

Hi Berndt,
I've been approached by Machine Learning / AI folks at LBNL to
consider partenering on a response to the BES/NP/HEP Facilities AI/ML call in the
context of sPHENIX.
Can you suggest someone for me to connect with for that?
Thanks,
Frank
