Hi Everyone
-- We recently became aware that Intel have been deprecating the low level tbb::task API that we rely on in HEP in multiple areas:
(see in particular comments from Chris there).
This led to some discussion in ATLAS Core Software last week, where overall people were not too worried (for Gaudi) as suitable alternatives seem to exist, in TBB or switching to HPX. I imagine other experiments and projects might also have discussed it also.
However, there is some worry that as there are different players, viz. ROOT, Geant4 and the experiment frameworks, that if different projects migrate in different ways this can cause problems with coordination of threads between different pieces of software.
We decided that having a discussion between projects and frameworks at an early stage is beneficial. I imagine a quick report (1-2 slides) on the status of each major project (Gaudi, CMSSW, ROOT, Geant4) and a discussion on the options for migration and evolution would be the best format - but please let me know your thoughts.
We have a semi-regular slot for HSF meetings Wednesdays at 17h on odd weeks that we could use, which would be either 6 or 20 May. Can people Doodle preferences?
Also, please do forward to anyone you think would be interested.
Thanks a lot
Graeme
