at least Joe is in a place where he can actually work for sPHENIX, from the ORNL website:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is operating on a normal schedule.

I let Chris comment, but forget the social finesse part! lol kidding kinda
For sure it is not a negative, we have to make the most of it to make it as positive as possible. And keep hiring (real hiring).
Trading travel for postdocs, I like that!

Let's think of this situation as an asset.

Joe could be a conduit to cultivate ORNL EIC as a "satellite" to BNL
EIC.  Especially as ORNL will have this newbie post-doc seeking any
kind of integration they can find, now's a good time to pounce.

It would require, at least, BNL EIC people to invite ORNL EIC people to
join in (as equals) to some regular nuts-and-bolts meeting.  This needs
to be an interesting meeting where real work is shared.  Open an honest,
trading analysis results, simulation usage, code help, etc.  Joe could
be asked/tasked to attend and bring the post-doc and all other
interested parties.  Some social finesse is probably needed to boot this
but if they see some real progress come out of it, I'm sure they will
start an orbit.

A similar kind of "satellite" was made in our MicroBooNE effort with the
Yale group and to some extent with Stony Brook.  In no small part this
was booted by enthusiasm of the professors and with physical visits to
BNL.  On our part it was our openness and seeking such collaboration and
then hosting it when it panned out.

My hope is Joe's tie can serve as a replacement for the enthusiastic
professors and the physical travel in order to repeat the general story.
Not exactly a symmetry, but I'm going for optimism here.

And with everyone WFH, what even are physical institutions anymore?

-Brett.
