Dear Eric, Torre,

 

In order to get LSST software/computing activities started quickly, NPP is planning to provide support from NPP PD funds in FY20: from July 1^st to September 30^th 2020. As we expect this activity will require 6-9 months (when the decision of LSST data facility is taken) we plan to ask for lab’s PD support beyond October 1^st 2020 for 3-6 months as the same level (see below). I expect that LSST will “match” funds for these activities from their project or operations funding as we are providing strong contribution for developing LSST data model and its testing.

 

Funding details for this fiscal year (CC Susan who is aware). The plan is to fund 0.5 FTE for three months in FY20. The split is about 50/50 between Eric and Torre groups. My understanding Will will work on this topic from Eric’s group and potentially Sergei from Torre’s group. Eric, Torre, please, send details to Susan, so she can work on the numbers/reserving funding. Each of them will be able to charge about 25% of their time over next three months to this activity.

 

I ask Will, who will coordinate this activity, and Andrei, who is coordinating all BNL LSST activities, to schedule about monthly meetings where status/progress will be discussed. Certainly more often meetings of experts are encouraged, including with LSST team.

 

I will be working with the Lab on PD funding for the next fiscal year, while we can start our efforts quickly with the above arrangement.
