Dear Colleagues,
Many of you have expressed interests in a lab-wide AI/ML working group to foster collaborations and ideation between directorates, and be better informed of the progress in the AI/ML community. Coincidentally, a few of us at CSI have been planning exactly such a working group. I am writing to let you know the status of our planning, and also seek your input on the next steps.
In our plan, the purpose of the BNL AI/ML working group is to
- Form a lab-wide AI/ML community to share common interests, challenges and collaboration opportunities
- Provide timely and appropriate training events to the lab staff on fundamentals of scientific AI/ML
- Share progress of scientific AI/ML to the lab community via seminars/workshops
Members of the working group will help formulate events of interest, share relevant AI/ML resources and coordinate activities in different departments/directorates at BNL.
We have created a survey to be sent to the lab community, with the goal of collecting some information about people’s interests, and also form the initial list of working group participants. The survey is here:
We are also in the process of setting up a web page to publicize upcoming events, which is not done yet.
I think it would be great if everyone on this email can be on the “Working Group Steering Committee” to help identify activities that the working group can take on. To this end, I would like to set up a meeting to discuss the rollout of the working group, including
* infrastructure to foster communications within the working group: slack, webpage, etc.
* first events to organize, including several proposals of AI/ML Day, Tutorials etc.
* LDRD Type A proposal focus area in AI/ML for FY22.
Please kindly fill in your availability in the Doodle Poll here: https://doodle.com/poll/dfhfhqeee2dw4qgc?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link
If none of the time slots works for you, I’d appreciate any input from you by emails.
Many Thanks!
Meifeng
