Hi all,
Those of you that were quick, will have noticed that the link to the workshop brochure is currently not working. The program manager let us know he is working on having it published, either today or tomorrow. The link should then be correct.
Best wishes,
Kerstin

Subject: ASCR call for proposals on Data Reduction for Science
Hi everyone,
DOE ASCR released another call for proposals today on Data Reduction for Science – the call was issued by both their Applied Math and their Computer Science program managers and therefore spans a broad set of potential topics.
- Call https://science.osti.gov/-/media/grants/pdf/foas/2021/SC_FOA_0002501.pdf
- Pre-Application required, due on May 6th 2021 at 5pm
- Full proposal due June 4th 2021
- Call based on workshop report PRDs 1-4 “Data Reduction for Science: Brochure from Advanced Scientific Computing Research Workshop,” https://doi.org/10.2172/1770192
- Per Lab funding $200K-$800K/year, other applicants $100K-$400K, an expectation for median award size anticipated to be $600K/year per lab.
- 3 year project duration
- Limitations: 2 pre-applications led per lab, 1 PI role per staff member, ability to partner on other proposals not limited.
- Due to the lab lead restriction we will institute an internal review process, and request pre-applications to be send to CSIProposals AT bnl.gov no later than 5 pm 4/26/2021
Further Guidance:
- Proposed research should not focus only on particular data sets from specific applications, but rather on creating the body of knowledge and understanding that will inform future scientific advances. Consequently, the funding from this Announcement is not intended to incrementally extend current research in the area of the proposed project. Rather, the proposed projects must reflect viable strategies toward the potential solution of challenging problems in data reduction for science. It is expected that the proposed projects will significantly benefit from the exploration of innovative ideas or from the development of unconventional approaches.
- Proposed approaches may include innovative research with one or more key characteristics, such as compression, reduced order models, experiment-specific triggers, filtering, and feature extraction, and may focus on cross-cutting concepts such as scientific machine learning or trust. Preference may be given to pre-applications that include reduction estimates for at least two science applications.
Please let me know if you have further questions on the call. I would appreciate an early heads up if you are planning to lead a pre-application – simple email with the basic idea and focus.
Best wishes,
Kerstin
