Dear colleagues:
I like to thank you all for your contributions to the RHIC science, the development of the EIC science, and to the development of the EIC detector proposals. The delivery of the detector proposals was the demonstration of a well-executed set of efforts by our teams heavily involved in the elaboration of the EIC proto-collaborations detector proposals, working side by side with the software and computing personnel in NPP.
With the EIC detector proposals review process underway, the ongoing RHIC Run 22, the upcoming sPHENIX installation and commissioning in Run 23, it is timely to assess the BNL Nuclear Physics Computing needs in the next 5 to 10+ years and develop a strategy for the successful transition from completing the RHIC mission to the start of the EIC science program. While the EIC can only be realized with a global multi-institution effort, as a host lab, BNL has an important role to play in the EIC computing.
I suggest that we hold a mini retreat (~half day) focusing on “Nuclear Physics Computing from RHIC to EIC” in January 2022. I hope this mini retreat will address the following:
- Evaluate the computing need for the completion of the RHIC program in the next 5+ years and come up with a strategy to meet the demand under budgetary constraints.
- Synergy between RHIC computing and EIC computing.
- Opportunities and development in AI/ML and other computing related areas at BNL, DOE national lab complex and beyond that will benefit RHIC and EIC computing.
- Effective collaboration with users and partners, especially with JLab in developing the EIC computing strategy and plan.
I like to thank Eric and Jamie for agreeing to co-lead this mini retreat. I look forward to a productive mini retreat and a written summary of the discussion of the above topics.
Happy New Year!
Best, Haiyan
