+1 for Zhaoyu. Torre, maybe Kolja could explain the low workload to her and make it her choice, she is juggling different things and we don’t want to overload her.

Hi Torre,
For the most part, it is not a very taxing program, requiring 1-2 hours twice a month on Wednesday afternoon for lectures (with varying degrees of interactivity). There are electives if you're interested in a specific subject and have more time. Finally, there's a group project that one can again spend a little time or a lot on. In the end, I did about 80% of the work for ours and that wasn't much. Other groups did very elaborate and time-intensive projects. I thought it was a good experience. Not all topics are relevant for us but that's okay, it's interesting to see a bit more of the HR and management details at the lab too.
Finally, if they qualify, all local new hires like Zhaoyu could probably take away something useful.
Best,Kolja

Subject: Call for Nominations: Science and Engineering Development Program
Hello All,
We are excited to announce the launch of the next cohort for the Science and Engineering Development Program. This program has been designed to foster the professional growth of early career scientists, research, and operations engineers (e.g., RS1 – RS3; P1 – P5; I5 – I8). The program has a January 2023 program orientation start date with a group of 30 individuals and are seeking your nominations for participants. *New this year – Based on feedback from last year’s program we have included additional courses such as “Communicating with the Site Office” offered by the BHSO team, as well as expanded the program participants to include both research and operations engineers to increase early career networking across functional areas.
To aid you in the selection process provided below are a brief description of the program along with nomination criteria. In addition, to aid you in communicating the program details attached are a flyer.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program is designed to foster engagement and teaming skills, increase understanding of how to align career growth to Lab strategy, gain awareness of how the functional aspects of the Lab tie into Lab operations, and enhance skills in presentations and proposal writing. With an average of 2 brief classes per month over a 7-month period – both in-person and virtual classes, participants have an option to engage in deeper dive electives. The core modules are designed to enhance knowledge and skills in four key areas:
- Align with the Lab – To have a big-picture understanding of the lab and how to align research, career, and interests with lab direction.
- Grow Your BNL Career – To increase knowledge of functional skills and areas that can enhance your career growth opportunities at Brookhaven.
- Develop a Compelling Idea – To foster an entrepreneurial mindset that aligns with lab core capabilities, influences decision-making, and addresses sponsor needs.
- Build Collaboration Through Communication – To enhance ability to communicate with cross-functional teams and expand networks to drive scientific discovery. As part of this module, we invite all participants to attend BNL2 Summit at Stony Brook University for increased networking opportunities.
Deep dive electives focus on publishing, proposal writing, engineering, and project management. Participants also will work with supervisors and/or resource mentors to engage in developmental activities based on their individual needs.
PARTICIPANT NOMINATION CRITERIA:
This program is designed for early career scientists, research, and operations engineers (e.g., RS1 – RS3; P1 – P5; I5 – I8)
- With one to ten years’ experience in a science or engineer track. (Please note that this program is not intended for post-docs.)
- With solid performance, it is not intended for individuals with ongoing performance issues.
- Ability to commit 2 short courses a month over a 7-month period.
- Whose manager is willing to engage and commit the time of the participant. The manager is required to provide feedback for the 360-Assessment, work with the participant to refine their IDP (Individual Development Plan) and meet with the participant 1 hour monthly to review application of learning.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING OF YOU:
- Please talk to your staff and let them know that you are nominating them for the program. Encourage them and let them know that this is important for their development. The attached flyer with program outline, courses and dates is designed to help you in these discussions to ensure they can free their calendars for the identified courses.
- Please provide your nominations for participants to me at slindner AT bnl.gov at your earliest convenience but no later than November 2, 2022. This will allow ample lead time for the nominees to hold class dates open on their calendars.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me at ext. 7537 if you have any questions or would like us to review the program with you in more detail.
Best regards,
Shari
