Good morning,
DOE Office of Science has released an Accelerate Innovation in Emerging Technologies call https://science.osti.gov/ascr/-/media/grants/pdf/lab-announcements/2023/LAB_23-3010.pdf . With only 4 submissions per lab permitted and complex requirements we will:
- Hold a Town Hall meeting on Friday February 24, 1-3 pm CSI building 725 , training room 2nd floor, virtual participation possible
- To provide a briefing on key aspects and expectations for the call
- Share a list of key features a successful pre-proposal needs to meet to be considered
- Allow for 5 minutes pitches of initial ideas (incl. Q&A, include requests for collaboration)
- Speed matching – opportunities for teams with different expertise to meet
- Please email lperagine AT bnl.gov if you would like to attend, please indicate if you expertise is in area 1,2,3 or 4 (see below), indicate if you would like to present a pitch.
The call asks to address gaps and accelerate innovations in use-inspired basic research requiring multidisciplinary teams with expertise in multiple key technology areas, collaboration with other labs expected, including.
Area 1: Computing and Data Area - High Performance Computing Data storage, management, and communications AI/ML
Area 2: Physics and Engineering Area - Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics Microelectronics Sensors
Area 3: Biology Area - Biotechnology Bio-inspired processes
Area 4: Materials and Chemistry - Energy Production, Storage, and Conversion Materials and Chemical Processes
Tie in to future use, in particular industrial use will be key, practical steps towards industry engagement are expected.
Possible topics could include:
- Autonomous materials design and testing
- Resolving technical bottlenecks for improving isotope production efficiency using AI/ML techniques multi-scale/multi-physics simulations of accelerator and reactor
- Integrating catalytic, biochemical, and/or biological manufacturing with AI/ML approaches to address fundamental barriers in translating science advances to the production of fuels, industrial chemicals, and materials to advance a circular economy
- More suggestions in the call
Specifically excluded are:
- Research on batteries and biopreparedness
- Topics related to medically relevant isotopes, human health or nutrition, or food or animal feed production
External deadlines and call constraints:
- Pre-proposal due to DOE: March 29
- Notification April 26
- Full proposal due June 7
- Teaming: The proposed research should involve multi-investigator, multidisciplinary research teams whose expertise is needed to address these challenges.
- Funding: This is a call only Labs can respond to. Floor $2M, Ceiling $4M
- Project duration: 2 years
- Limitations: DOE National Laboratories are limited to no more than four pre-proposals and four proposals, with no more than 2 to a lead office.
Best wishes,
Kerstin, Jim, Haiyan, Martin and David
