Here is the draft posting for the full-FTE Paul replacement on Belle II. I include also the blurb I plan to include in the HSF forum email on it (the blurb not needing to be vetted by HR). Where we can or can’t mention CERN is an issue.

Blurb:

Brookhaven National Laboratory has an opening for a Software Physicist in the Physics Department’s Nuclear and Particle Physics Software (NPPS) Group. The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in developing software and computing for the Belle II experiment, and to contribute to physics research at the intensity frontier at BNL. We are seeking a physicist with strong software skills and an interest in a scientific software career path. Consistent with the common software mandate of NPPS, the position is likely to involve extending effort and expertise to other experiments as well over time. NPPS participates in 10 HEP and NP experiments across  BNL’s physics program.

The hire is anticipated to be based at BNL, but a remote work arrangement at CERN or domestically in the US is possible under appropriate circumstances.

• No meeting(s) in our regular slot this week because of ATLAS S&C week

• But there’s plenty to discuss (cf below), how about a meeting on Friday at 9 or 10am?

• Paul Laycock’s last BNL day was June 8. Fully amicable of course, he will join our CERN NPPS dinner on June 15, I had a good dinner chat with him on June 10

• we made a so far unsuccessful attempt to preserve Paul’s BNL email. His working email is paul.james.laycock AT cern.ch

Torre becomes the supervisor of Paul’s direct reports (Cedric, Ruslan, Lino) at least for the time being

Cedric becomes the senior person on the NPPS intensity frontier team. David Jaffe is opening an RS-3 or RS-4 (depending on qualifications of successful applicant) NPPS position for a Belle II developer, ie not a direct replacement of Paul, a more junior full FTE position

DUNE post-Paul is up in the air, under discussion. The management (Dmitri in particular) is very eager that we replace Paul (50% effort) with a senior person.

Replacing Paul on the leadership team: Paul’s suggestion is Cedric (who just became Belle II Deputy Computing Coordinator). A good suggestion I think. Thoughts?

Doug Benjamin is making a push to move from SDCC to NPPS, carrying with him the 90% of his responsibilities in DUNE, ATLAS and sPHENIX that he says are not tied to SDCC.

the Carlene replacement job posting has been up for a while, at least two candidates have been identified

Congrats to Alexei, his ASCR proposal was successful! Not public info yet.
