Subject: FW: LDRD Decisions from last week
Dear Colleagues,
The Lab has decided to make significant changes to how LDRD Type A will be organized. The plan is described in the attached WORD file. It will start with the FY25 LDRD call, and will be fully implemented for the call for FY26 LDRD Type A proposals. As in the past, 10 initiatives are considered for LDRD Type A proposals. I have been asked to serve as the point of contact for the HEP initiative. The main change for the process is that only a limited number of initiatives will be selected for each call, following a discussion made by lab management with pitches from each initiative, which will happen in mid November. The call for FY25 LDRD Type A proposal will come in early December.
I am reaching out to you as the leaders in various HEP activities, to help me prepare the presentation for the HEP initiative in the process. I hope you will inform the relevant people in your organizations to seek inputs.
The P5 report will be released in Dec this year, and it will guide the development of future HEP projects. It is extremely important that our HEP program is aligned with the P5 priorities. This will require significant investment by the Lab, and LDRD Type A is one of the tools that can enable us to be ready to take on the major responsibilities for future HEP projects.
The template for the initiative pitch is also attached. I will be working on preparing these slides. Your input is very much appreciated.
Best regards,
Hong.

Subject: LDRD Decisions from last week
All, we made some decisions on the LDRD program last week, so wanted to memorialize them here (and in the OneNote notebook 9/21/23 meeting (Web view)).
- We decided on the points of contacts to make the FY25 pitch for the respective initiatives:
a. AS&T Mark Palmer
2. Climate Science Alistair Rogers
3. Clean Energy (inc nuclear) Esther Takeuchi
4. Human-AI-Facilities Kerstin Kleese van Dam
5. High Energy Physics Hong Ma
6. Isotope production Cathy Cutler
7. QIS Gabriella Carini
8. EIC 2nd detector and software and computing Jamie Dunlop
9. Microelectronics Chuck Black
10. National Security (including Biopreparedness) Martin Schoonen
- Those point of contacts should represent the lab as a whole, not their individual organizations and should reach out to people across the lab to coordinate their response. You should talk to them now. I will also send them an email explaining their responsibilities
- Initiative pitch deck template is attached.
- Pitches will be made in mid-Nov ie 6 weeks from now. Exact dates TBD
- Decisions on which initiatives to be selected for FY25 will be made by Dec 1st and call for type A’s will go out then
- Type B call is independent of type A and can be made at any time. Goal is to release it Nov 1st or before. ALDs should warn their folks now.
- Overall LDRD program description is attached. Kathi will edit as appropriate and post on the web. Note this discusses LDRD program as it will be in steady state. This first year there will be some differences in the timing of calls and the ISCs which are not yet formed or at work. They (the ISCs) will grow out of the point of contacts work this year.
Thanks a lot,
J.
