Dear all,

ASCR released a new lab only call for proposals for fundamental applied math and computer science research portfolios. There will only be one response per lab, which will be coordinated by CSI. As we are asked to submit a portfolio of research thrusts, we are soliciting ideas for fundamental research ideas across the BNL. Please be so kind to send me any ideas (or a decline if you are not interested) by Tuesday next week. The initial write up should not be longer than a paragraph, but convey the fundamental research challenge that would be addressed.

Many thanks,

Kerstin

CRLC,

It is my pleasure to inform you that ASCR has posted LAB 24-3210, Competitive Portfolios for Advanced Scientific Computing Research. This announcement serves as a recompetition of our base applied-mathematics program, but also adds computer science and advanced computing technologies to a comprehensive envisioned program of core scientific-computing research investments.

LOIs are Required.  Due February 27, 2024 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Must be submitted by an authorized institutional representative.

LOI Response Date: March 19, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.

Proposal Due Date: April 30, 2024 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time.

To ensure continued leadership in delivering on the promise of computational science, and drive innovation in energy-efficient and versatile high-performance computing for science, ASCR seeks to invest in DOE National Laboratory-led portfolios that: support long-term, high-impact research; aggressively respond to, and take advantage of, emerging science and technology trends; and collaborate with a diverse community of the most-promising academic and industry partners.

Please note that each Laboratory is limited to leading one proposal in response to this announcement. The Principal Investigator (PI) must be a Laboratory division director or a manager with equivalent supervisory responsibilities. The proposal narrative (at most 30 pages) must provide a Laboratory vision and management plan for the portfolio of capabilities stemming from the proposed research and development in scientific computing. The ceiling is $10,000,000 per year, and as described in Section I, each proposal will be divided into one or more Thrusts. The budget for each thrust may not exceed $2,000,000 per year. ASCR intends to award no more than $5,000,000 per year across all thrusts described in each proposal. This means that, for example, if the total proposed budget is $10,000,000 per year, ASCR intends to award no more than half of the funding requested for a negotiated subset of the work proposed.

We look forward to your LOIs and proposals. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

-Hal
