Hi all,
I want to give you a heads up on changes coming to the group. I’ve decided to retire at the end of the calendar year. I’ll be heading to Canada to the house where I grew up to help out my mother. There are very many details still to be worked out but this is the gist of it. I’ve discussed this with our management in recent days. I also told Hong my plan for a more immediate change that I think we have needed for some time: the NPPS group needs a deputy group leader. The leadership team works well to bring all our principal activities into the management of the group but it isn’t enough as the group continues to grow. Johannes is the person I have had in mind for some time for this role, and he hasn’t refused :-) This will also bring very many details still to be worked out. But everyone in the group should have early awareness of what’s in the works, hence this mail. Please feel free to talk to me about this, come by or we can arrange a zoom call. We can discuss all at the next group meeting on April 9, by that time there will be at least a bit more clarity to the plans.

Hi Attila,
Greetings and I hope all is well! Johannes told me of your recent conversation and the interest you still have in whether there’s a BNL opportunity that might attract you. Since you and I talked last Spring we have been trying to work out possibilities between ATLAS, EIC and/or DUNE, which have clearly been slow in developing! But your renewed _expression_ of interest has put us into high gear. And there’s an important new factor -- I am going to retire at the end of the calendar year, which brings more budget flexibility in our planning, both now and in 2026. Factoring in my retirement points us more to EIC than to DUNE, since EIC is what I work on. So we will be wanting to interest you in EIC work :-) The EIC leadership at BNL recently told me how urgent it is that we build up tracking/ACTS expertise in ePIC to resolve critical questions on detector performance, to cite just one area in which you could have a very large impact.
So this note is to let you know that we are working on it, and we now have more to work with. If we are successful, we will open a position to a competitive search and we’ll hope that you apply. Johannes and I will share more info as it develops, and we can all have a discussion as discussion points firm up, or whenever you wish for that matter.
