Minutes from meeting 3/13/2017

Joe Osborn – sPHENIX midrapidity gamma-jet simulations

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

PYTHIA 8 studies based on Jet Structure Topical Group simulation files.  Reconstructed jets using anti-kT algorithm with R=0.4.

Studies indicate that jet can be reliably reconstructed using calorimetry down to ~9-12 GeV pT.

–Suggestion that track information can be used to improve reconstruction down to lower pT.

Statistics estimates for gamma-jet for 300 pb^-1 of 200 GeV p+p data based on direct photon cross section measurements from PHENIX.  Order of magnitude 10^6 for gamma pT = 10 GeV, and consistent with Jet Structure TG estimate of 10^4 gammas with pT>30 GeV.

-Suggestion to estimate yields from PYTHIA—should be good for getting order of magnitude.

Resolution estimates of gamma-jet out-of-plane momentum component p_out and of Delta phi—current detector configuration should be sufficient to make good measurement differential in Delta-phi and p_out.

To investigate – Ability to distinguish gamma-jet from dijet.  Also consider what might be gained by forward instrumentation—cross section drops at large rapidity, but if had enough statistics, could access different x ranges, and potentially change quark/gluon contributions.

Thomas Krahulik – DIS Studies Using PYTHIA 6

---------------------------------------------------------

New Stony Brook undergraduates joining EIC simulations.

Already using standalone ROOT TPythia6 simulations—goal is to put through GEANT4 implementation of EIC detector based on sPHENIX as part of preparation of updated LOI.  Currently cross-checking kinematic distributions against previous LOI.

p. 5 - Apparently different x-Q^2 coverage for 10 GeV x 250 GeV compared to previous LOI.  Double check settings and kinematic cuts.  Previous LOI also used hadronic reconstruction method in addition to using just the scattered electron to gain coverage.

Discussion of LOI for forward instrumentation requested by Berndt Mueller

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For consideration by the PAC in mid-June, will be due ~1 month earlier—date not yet specified.  Dave and Gunther will meet with Berndt this Wednesday to get further clarification on the charge.

Concern about giving the impression that the EIC would be delayed in favor of cold QCD running.  Need to be cautious regarding what is presented.

Nils and Christine developing initial draft outline based on physics in RHIC Cold QCD Plan (https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.03922).  Need to decide quickly what physics and measurements to focus on so that necessary simulations can be run.

Expect to increase meeting frequency over next months as LOI is prepared.

Dear all,

Just a reminder that we will have our Cold QCD topical group meeting at 8:30pm EDT tonight (https://bluejeans.com/345777492).

Joe Osborn will present an update on his photon-jet studies in sPHENIX, and Thomas Krahulik will show some Pythia plots for Deep Inelastic Scattering in e-p collisions.

Because of the blizzard that's supposed to hit Long Island tonight, we will NOT meet in person at BNL and have a BlueJeans only meeting.

Talk to you tonight!

-Nils

Dear Cold QCD enthusiasts,

our next meeting will be

Monday, March 13, 8:30pm EST (evening).

The BlueJeans link is https://bluejeans.com/345777492.

The agenda is evolving at https://indico.bnl.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=2939. Joe Osborn will present an update on his photon-jet studies in sPHENIX. Who else would like to present something?

We are looking forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Best,

Christine Aidala & Nils Feege
