Hi Dave, I think your proposed title is good. I do agree that the
"BNL Concept Detector" title is misleading and if it were me I
would state that to Thomas and strongly suggest the title be
changed. Just putting an "A" in front would go a long ways.
Leaving it as it stands is actually kind of against the stated
purpose of the workshop, which is to "start the discussion" about
the kind of detector required to do the physics. Implying that
there is already a selection by laboratory is not consistent with
that. John On 11/1/2017 11:07 AM, David Morrison

Hi John et al, I talked to Thomas Ullrich about wanting to change the talk title. I didn't yet suggest a specific new title, but aligning it with the title of the letter of intent on the arXiv, I'd propose it be something like: Detector concept using the BaBar solenoid That's short enough to fit in with the other titles. I'm not so happy to see that there a talk "BNL Concept Detector" which I presume will be about "BEAST". I don't mind that there's a talk about a "green field" detector for eRHIC, but I think the title implies that it's BNL's preferred design. Thoughts? I think the issue with the title of the talk on the agenda points out the main issue between sPHENIX and the EIC detector community. The fact that it is so easily referred to as "ePHENIX" attaches a label that implies that "ePHENIX" is a complete concept, and when people from outside sPHENIX start from that point it makes communication and discussion difficult at best. It leaves an impression that we are trying to push "ePHENIX" from an economic starting point, not necessarily from what does the best physics, and it leaves little room for involvement outside the sPHENIX collaboration. As you rightly point out, nothing could be further from the truth, and we need to fight that impression. The change in title is a good (and necessary) start, but of course you will have to pitch your talk carefully as well. You could take a very extreme view and be very explicit that if you were to just take the magnet and flux return (and therefore the outer HCAL) and threw away everything else you would have a foundation for an EIC detector that would build on the existing BNL/DOE investment. You could then discuss the "EIC detector concept" as a strawman, and welcome and encourage other approaches that build on the sPHENIX foundation. Just my $0.02. It would be very useful to discuss how to approach this presentation. The agenda for the meeting is now online here: https://indico.bnl.gov/conferenceOtherViews.py?confId=3737 One thing I can see right from the start is that we should ask the organizers to rename the presentation. Some of you will recall we went to lengths to refer to an EIC detector at IP8 in the very open terms – the 2014 letter of intent on the archive is titled, "Concept for an Electron Ion Collider (EIC) detector built around the BaBar solenoid". I think that continued openness serves us well. But changing the title is a pretty minor consideration. There are many other aspects of this presentation that would be good to discuss.
