Alessio Del Dotto – Update on simulation of a gas RICH and dual-radiator RICH for an EIC detector based on sPHENIX

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set up reconstruction code to compare a CF4-based gas RICH in the sPHENIX simulation framework (hadron-going beam direction at the EIC) to a dual-radiator aerogel + C2F6 RICH implemented in the JLab-based GMC GEANT MC framework.

Conclusions:

Chromatic dispersion dominates the angular resolution for the gas RICH.  CF4 gas seems not optimal to be coupled with another system (a modular RICH) to perform PID over the full momentum range—heavier gases should be explored, but will need to have good transparency in the UV region for GEM readout, and low scintillation.

With outward reflection for the dual-radiator RICH, the emission error dominates the resolution at small polar angles, but this can likely be improved with geometry modifications.  The dual-radiator RICH, by design, can perform pi/K/p separation over the full momentum range up to 50 GeV/c.  With the detector away from the beam, smaller backgrounds and a reduced magnetic field are expected.  The aerogel drives the photosensors to be solid state, e.g. SiPMs or LAPPDs.
