Minutes:
News – Christine Aidala ----------------------------- A request for an updated LOI for an EIC detector based on the BaBar solenoid is anticipated from Berndt Mueller, with some material tentatively developed for presentation to the PAC in June, and the final LOI expected to be due by the September DOE site visit. Discussions are ongoing regarding the details of the charge.
First look at analyzing DIS events with a full GEANT4 simulation of EIC-sPHENIX – Nils Feege --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In anticipation of the charge to update the LOI, Nils has started the first simulations using full GEANT4. Note that for the previous LOI (https://arxiv.org/abs/1402.1209), the simulations were all at the event-generator level with smearing added to emulate detector resolutions.
PYTHIA6 e+p is already set up to work directly in Fun4All. The full software chain from PYTHIA6 through GEANT4 through reconstruction through a basic analysis module where relevant variables are stored in a ROOT tree is already in place. An EIC-sPHENIX analysis tutorial is also now available on the Wiki.
The interaction region and beamline magnets ~80 meters into the tunnel are also in place and have already been cross checked.
Thanks, Nils, for getting this all set up!!
Plenty of work left to do! In particular related to reconstruction—clustering, tracking, electron ID—but also debugging/double checking input generated events. Beyond that, simulation studies of particular observables will need to be done.
Characterization of pi0à gamma gamma detection in the proposed sPHENIX Forward EMC – Ezra Lesser (Michigan) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forward EMCal - Repurposed PHENIX PbSc from 1.4 < eta < 3, repurposed PHENIX MPC PbWO4 crystals 3 < eta < 4 (same pseudorapidity range in which the MPC sat in PHENIX).
Motivated by forward direct photon / neutral pion separation, looked at single-particle photons and pi0s in the forward region. Just looked at pseudorapidities up to 3, as we don’t expect to do direct photon / pi0 separation at higher eta. Clean single photon peak observed. With current clustering algorithm, see significant cluster merging from pi0 decay photons already at pi0 momentum of ~6.5 GeV/c. Given significant recent improvements in direct photon/pi0 separation in sPHENIX barrel due to Sasha’s updated clustering algorithm, expect notable improvements to be possible in the forward region as well with improved clustering. Work ongoing by Sasha.

On Behalf Of Nils Feege
Dear Cold QCD enthusiasts,
our next meeting is scheduled for
Monday, February 19, 8:30pm ET.
The meeting is BlueJeans only (https://bluejeans.com/345777492) with the agenda evolving at https://indico.bnl.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=4277
If you would like to present something (either at this meeting or at the next one on 3/5), please let Christine and me know and we will happily put your name on the agenda.
We look forward to hearing you at the meeting.
