Christine Aidala – Energy, species, luminosity values to use for EIC-sPHENIX LOI

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The draft of the eRHIC pre-CDR that underwent review last week was provided to Nils and Christine.  All energy, species, luminosity, and polarization values we use for the LOI need to be consistent with what’s in the pre-CDR.  The final version of the pre-CDR is expected to be released in late June.

Based on discussion, it was decided that the highest ion beam energy to study for the LOI should be 100 GeV rather than the maximum value of 110 GeV cited in the pre-CDR.  100 GeV will match what has been used in a number of previous studies.

Values are summarized here and will be posted on a dedicated Wiki page to be created for the LOI.

e+p beam energy configurations for LOI:

18 x 275

10 x 275

10 x 100

5 x 100

e+A beam energy configurations for LOI:

18 x 100

10 x 100

5 x 100

Assume Pb as heavy species, d for light, Cu as an intermediate species if needed.

Assume 70% polarization for both electrons and protons.

Assume 10 fb^-1 integrated luminosity for any given configuration.

Assume 22 mrad crossing angle for any study to which it may be relevant.

Nils Feege – Revisiting EIC-sPHENIX  envelopes and compatibility with sPHENIX

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modified layout shown on slide 5 will be the default configuration to study, with the exception that we still need to follow up on different possibilities to recover the gap in EMCal coverage in the electron-going direction (negative pseudorapidity).  Possibilities discussed included:

-Modifying the negative eta hadron PID to something thinner than a RICH so that the EEMC could be moved in.  Can any dE/dx information from the TPC be useful?

-Removing the electron-direction hadron PID entirely so that the EEMC could be moved in.  Not a desirable option due to reduction in semi-inclusive and exclusive physics at lower x values.  Also, “default” designs for an EIC detector have hadron PID in this region, so the choice of not having any would have to be carefully defended.

-Sliding out the negative eta CEMC half-sectors and remounting the towers in a modified box that extends farther out at negative eta, adding new towers to fill the extended box.  Will follow up with sPHENIX CEMC group to see if this is plausible.

Other follow-up item: Ask Klaus Dehmelt to provide a specific estimate for the space needed for the TPC readout by the time of the EIC.  Our current understanding is that it is expected to be reduced from the sPHENIX TPC readout design, but we need a specific value to use for the LOI.

Dear Cold QCD enthusiasts,

our next meeting is scheduled for tonight

Monday, April 30th, 8:30pm ET.

The meeting is BlueJeans only (https://bluejeans.com/345777492) with the agenda evolving at https://indico.bnl.gov/event/4595/

We'll discuss the Luminosity projections we plan to use for the Letter of Intent, as well as some modifications to the EIC-sPHENIX detector layout. If you would like to present something (either at this meeting or at the next one on 5/14), please let Christine and me know and we will happily put your name on the agenda.

We look forward to hearing you at the meeting.

Best,

Christine Aidala & Nils Feege

Conveners sPHENIX Cold QCD Topical Group
