Dear sPHENIX/EIC enthusiasts,

Gunther and I received the following from Berndt Mueller this morning.
We had already relayed to you at a recent general meeting that the ALD
had told us he was no longer looking for a cost estimate to accompany
the LOI. Now we have that un-request in writing. He also asks for a
change in the name of the document - and that change seems reasonable.

In return, we've suggested a new deadline of the end of October to allow
us to accommodate these changes and to finalize the document, but we
have yet to hear back from him on that.

Regards,
Dave and Gunther

Dear Gunther & Dave:

As we already at the last sPHENIX spokespersons meeting, at this point
in time a cost estimate for the conversion of sPHENIX from its baseline
configuration, including the MVTX, into a Day-1 eRHIC detector is no
longer needed. I therefore ask you to refrain from developing and
communicating such an estimate. As we have discussed this before, I
trust that no undue effort has been spent of developing a cost estimate.

In addition, as there is a high likelihood that DOE will initiate the
formal EIC facility project in the near future with a declaration of
Mission Need, it seems recommendable to avoid terms that have meaning in
the formal project development process. In particular, it is advisable
to avoid the term “Letter of Intent.” I therefore ask you to use the
term “Design Study Update” instead for the document I requested in my
communication dated April 5, 2018.

As always, I very much appreciate your help and cooperation.

Best regards

Berndt
