Minutes:

There was discussion of draft content for two presentations at the EIC User Group meeting next week in Paris that are related to an EIC detector based on the sPHENIX solenoid, and an update from Murad on R&D for a modular aerogel RICH.

EICUG meeting talk: A Data Acquisition System for the EIC – Jin Huang and Martin Purschke

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the EIC Detector Design Study document was submitted to BNL at the end of October, now background rates from beam gas interactions have been studied, with a vacuum profile based on HERA experience.  Also BNL LDRD 19-026 on Common Development for Advanced DAQ (EIC, DUNE, nEXO, BELLE-II, and 21-cm digital interferometer).  sPHENIX will provide an early implementation of streaming DAQ for tracking.

p. 7-8 – Comment that forward (hadron-going-direction) EMCal contributes significantly to the data rate—could be reduced by increasing the minimum energy threshold.  Current energy threshold is a single tower threshold of 30 MeV.  Could introduce local triggering—would be like a higher-level software trigger rather than at the hardware level.

Data rates for PID detectors have not yet been studied, but are estimated to be similar to data rates for tracking.

EICUG meeting talk: A generic software adapted for EIC simulation and reconstruction – Chris Pinkenburg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fun4All software framework – Initially developed for PHENIX in 2003 to process data, with continued development and improvement since then based on extensive usage.  Highly modular, for large-scale data processing and analysis.  EIC-sPHENIX simulation and reconstruction already fully implemented within Fun4All.  Singularity container makes it possible to download full framework from a browser and run standalone on a laptop/local cluster.  https://github.com/sPHENIX-Collaboration/Singularity   Can also make modifications locally to implement different versions of subdetectors, and/or upload modifications to make them available to the entire community.  JLEIC detector also in the process of being implemented

Comment/Question: Possible to support easy adjustment of GEANT volume definitions?  -Yes, everything designed to be modular, but further documentation/examples/support needed to get started.  To help provide support for users, Chris proposed setting up a Slack channel dedicated to EIC detector simulation development within Fun4All, unrelated to sPHENIX.  Jin will follow up.  Michigan group is also actively using the standalone setup, both on individual laptops and implemented on a local server, to give feedback to make it easier for others to use.

Update on a modular aerogel RICH for the EIC – Murad Sarsour, Xu Sun, and Xiaochun He

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Compact PID device designed for pi/K separation up to ~10 GeV and e/pi separation up to 2 GeV.  Lens-based focusing improves performance and cost with respect to traditional aerogel detectors.  Could be used both at moderately forward and (farther) backward rapidities at the EIC.  Has been implemented in GEANT in the forward region for EIC-sPHENIX and the backward direction for JLEIC.

1st test beam demonstrated principle.  Now 2nd test beam has demonstrated PID capabilities.  Simulation reproduces test beam data excellently.  Different sensors being studied, and radiation hardness of Fresnel lens.  Plans underway for a joint dual-radiator RICH and modular RICH ~2 GeV electron test beam.

Hope to secure resources for physics measurements before the EIC, either in the forward direction at sPHENIX or integrated into an experiment at JLab.  Given modular design, modules likely to be reusable for the EIC later on.

Dear sPHENIX ColdQCD-ers,

We're having the group meeting on the coming Tuesday, July 16 at 9am, where we will discuss the presentations by Jin and Chris related to EIC-sPHENIX for the coming EIC User's meeting to take place in the following week, and Murad will give an update on mRICH.
Agenda is in https://indico.bnl.gov/event/6412/
with Bluejeans: https://bluejeans.com/345777492

See/hear you on Tuesday morning.

Christine and Sasha.
