On Saturday, April 23, 2016, at about 1:15 p.m., a transformer located on the Fermilab site at MI-60 malfunctioned and resulted in a fire. Fire companies from Fermilab, Batavia, Geneva, and North Aurora responded and extinguished the fire. Nobody was injured.

The fire, started by the malfunctioning transformer, damaged a power-supply system that is critical to the operation of the Recycler storage ring of the Fermilab accelerator complex.  Experts are still making detailed assessments about when the Main Injector would restart, likely operating at lower intensities without the Recycler.

Preliminary investigations indicate that mineral oil located inside the transformer at MI-60 fueled the fire. The fire damaged an adjacent utility building and the power supply located inside that building. The plume of smoke may have been visible off site.

Fermilab will provide an update in the next few days when more information about the needed repairs is available.
