An update from FNAL on last Saturday's "incident" at FNAL. The new
mode of operation has not had a significant impact on our test beam
operations other then the lost time on Saturday. Kudo's to the FNAL
Accelerator Division for a fast recovery. Eric -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Update: Main Injector operates again following transformer failure Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2016 19:19:50 +0000 From: Fermilab News <news AT fnal.gov> To: all-users <all-users AT fnal.gov> The Main Injector accelerator at
Fermilab is operating again after a transformer located at
MI-60 malfunctioned and resulted in a fire (see email sent
to Fermilab users on Saturday, April 23). Because the
Recycler ring is still off-line, the Main Injector is delivering neutrino beam
intensities that are about 50 percent lower than usual
(about 300 kilowatts instead of 600 kilowatts).
We are exploring a temporary fix
that would allow us to return the Recycler to operation by
connecting RF systems for the
Recycler to a Main Injector RF
supply. Replacing the transformer and repairing the power
supply damaged by the fire may not be possible before the
2-month maintenance shutdown of the Fermilab accelerator
complex scheduled for this summer.
For more information about the
transformer fire, see this article on the Fermilab at Work
