Hi,
John, wherever this proposal came from and whoever made it I would support it
wholeheartedly. My experience with CAEN - never works like in the manual but
only because at first one does not know how to read that manual. It is
certainly a slow and low range resolution (12 bits) but other than that - it
is tuned to what we call High Gain in our test beam implementation so should
be more then OK for tile testing. It regulates bias in the range 20-90V (can
use it for many purposes) but probably does not have an individual channel
controlled trip current (or maybe yes) and it is unclear the total current it
may deliver (but we will learn). Etc.
the proposal came from Mazsi (and Balazs), who discovered it while
thinking about the readout electronics.
There is more than a flyer on the web
http://www.caen.it/csite/CaenProd.jsp?parent=10&idmod=1040
also look at the manual (in the documentation link), 37 pages,
nice and detailed.
Gabor
One more thing which looks a bit of overkill - regulating both bias and
amplifier gain (missing infor if this controllable gain is valid to both
shaping amplifier or trigger only).
Unfortunately the only info you may find on the web is short flier. So I dug
further (not too deep) just to discover that in our test setup at UNIPLAST we
are already using something what is probably some kind of early development
prototype of a same board (or of a same idea) produced by Igor Kreslo who is
submitting author on arXiv:1606.02290v1 [physics.ins-det]. I am asking Igor
to tell if we can get something of a kind on loan.
Nice reading

Good question, can't tell. It turns out we may have one at the lab over in
Instrumentation, I'm checking.

Hi John,
This looks really nice but I had Sawaiz take a quick look and from our
conversation yesterday it sounded like he thought only one channel can be
read out at a time. I didn't look closely enough myself yet but have you? Can
we record info from all channels simultaneously?
Best,
-Megan

Megan and John,
I have a tendency to gloss over the details until I'm holding the hardware in
my hands, but looking through the stuff on the web, this thing looks like
pretty much what we were talking about designing. As far as I can see,
making it into a portable instrument would consist of messing around with
some connectors, and setting up an rpi that could run some software to
collect data.
The price is low enough so that I could credit card up one of these, and I
think I could loan it to whoever has time to work on it.
