Right after the collaboration meeting, Eric and I got the message below from Mandy, which we'll have to respond to in the next few days.

I'll remind you that we're tentatively on the schedule for Feb 21-Mar 28, 2018, and they presently show test beam operation Oct 11, 2017-July 10, 2018.

If they were to start "as normal" as Mandy suggests, the run would be over by the beginning of January 2018, and we would have to be ready by November 2017 or so, which would be a stretch. She doesn't say it, but there may be more pressure to squeeze the nine months of test beam into three.

Those are the facts, my present thinking:

What we will need to tell her is that we won't be ready before "x" and we need at least "y" weeks to do the minimal program. To start the discussion, I'd guess x = Jan 15, and y = 3 weeks, and I'd be inclined to say say that for one of the weeks we'd have HCAL-only running which could in principle share beam time with an upstream experiment as long as it's not too much material in the beam and they can live with our changing beam energies.

Let's discuss this on the list. Thanks.

Hi Eric, John,

As you probably know, the President’s budget for FY18 curtails a lot of our
budget. If it stays as it is, we’d only run for 3 months next year. In the
next few weeks, I’m preparing a presentation about the Test beam program for
next year. Can you send me a statement as to what the impact would be to your
program if you couldn’t take data at the test beam?

Thanks,

Mandy

In response to a followup question, Mandy said:

There is no news on when we would run. Some think we’ll just start running as
normal and then go as long as we can. But we are still very much in the prep
phase.
