I will have a full report for the next HCal meeting, but here is a very preliminary summary of temperatures in the iHCal. Using a standalone set of thermocouples provided to me by Rob, i placed 4 thermocouples inside the iHCal. One mounted in thermal contact with the interface board, 1 floating in the endcap box, 1 in thermal contact with a preamp, and 1 floating near the preamp. A total of 24 preamps, 1 interface and 1 LED board were powered. Prior to powering the sector, the 4 thermocouples were reading 27.7C to 28.3C, which was about the temperature of 912. After 1 hour of being powered, the the 4 thermocouples were reading between 31C and 33C. Poking inside the endcap, the hottest point I could find was the regulators, which were approaching 50C. The data was recorded and I need to work with Rob to extract it.
I would like to rerun this little exercise again later this week and record the temps of the 24 thermistors connected to the preamps (I thought I was doing that but this is the old style interface and I did not hook up the test pulse cable, so the read back does not make sense), and run for a couple of hours.
As I have said in the past, I don't think there is a thermal issue in the region of the preamps. I do think we need to have a way of getting some air flow across the heat sinks that will be installed on the next generation of interface boards.
