Hi

I had hoped to send out a message before and then I hoped to attend the meeting but I think that I cannot because of child care logistics.

I have concerns that have not been addressed. I did raise these at a general meeting but I do not recall hearing any response. It is very important to have a process to appeal the decision if someone is deemed to not meet the qualifications for authorship. This policy has no such process. It is not clear who exactly decides whether someone is an author either. That issue also needs to be clearer in the policy. I will vote no on any policy that does not have those issues addressed.

I am not a big fan of the service work requirement. I have seen this used for abuse and bullying in the past in other collaborations. However if the collaboration decides that is how it would like to proceed, I did it. But we need to have protections against abuse and bullying. In particular the service work requirement makes incoming tenure track faculty particularly vulnerable.

I am specifically concerned about how this would impact one of my students. She is a second-year student who just passed the qualifier in January and because she was taking the qualifier and in classes and is also on jetscape, we did not have her work significantly on sphenix in the summer between her first and second years. She has probably not met the requirement to be grandfathered in but there is now no time for us to get her to meet the authorship requirements in time for the first run. I did not have sufficient notice of the policy to be able to get her to meet the requirements for authorship. I don't think that that's fair to her. Either that or if she could be included as an author the policy is unclear enough that it is not clear that she could be included as an author. So either it is unclear or unfair.

I am a bit worried about the process too. I believe this was discussed at one general meeting but a broad outline and not a specific policy. It may have been discussed at the collaboration meeting which I had to miss but there were no further discussions for people who might not have been able to be there. And then we saw a draft and we're supposed to vote on it less than 2 weeks after seeing it with no chance to comment on the first concrete draft that at least I saw. Maybe I missed some things but I have at least made a good faith effort to follow the discussions because I am very interested in it, so at least I don't think that the discussions of this very important policy were broad and inclusive.

Thanks and sorry I couldn't make the ib meeting.

Dear IB members,

This is a friendly reminder for our IB meeting next week, where we will have the (hopefully) final discussion of our proposed authorship policy.

We have prepared an Indico page for the meeting:
The current authorship policy draft can be found on this page.

We will add Zoom connection information to Indico shortly.

Best,

Gunther and Dave
