The University of Colorado CMS group encourages applications for a position in the role of Firmware Engineer or Research Scientist to work on upgrades to the trigger system for the CERN CMS experiment. The successful applicant will design, write, test, and maintain firmware for the upgraded CMS trigger system (Track Finder and Global Track Trigger) and work with engineers and scientists on integrating algorithms into firmware, modeling the firmware in software, and developing monitoring tools.

Required qualifications are:

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or physics with at least two years of post-baccalaureate experience or a Ph.D. in electrical engineering or physics.
• Experience in FPGA firmware development and simulation (Verilog and/or VHDL).
• Experience operating hardware with high-performance FPGAs.
• Strong analytical skills as applied to solving engineering problems.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other engineers and physicists as well as students and postdoctoral researchers.
Additional helpful qualifications include:

• Experience with FPGA frameworks and integrating algorithms.
• Experience with Xilinx Vivado high level synthesis (HLS) tools.
• Experience with high-speed optical links.
• Experience with modern particle detectors and data analysis techniques.
• Experience with detector simulations and trigger algorithm development.
This position could be filled by a qualified and experienced electronics engineer with an interest in joining a scientific research project, or by a hardware-oriented physicist who wishes to pursue a career in detector systems development. While a fully remote position is possible, priority may be given to candidates who are able to relocate to Boulder, Colorado, CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, or Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, CV or resume, statement of technical and research experience, and contact information for at least three references through the CU portal:
https://jobs.colorado.edu/jobs/JobDetail/?jobId=49701 . For full consideration, please apply by July 31, 2023. The position will remain open until filled.
