sPHENIX is a new detector at RHIC.

Dear collaborators,

Yesterday, Gunther, Ed and I submitted to ALD Berndt Mueller – jointly from 
the Collaboration and Project Management – our response to his charge about 
sPHENIX scope and cost.  The final version we submitted, incorporating many 
of the comments we received on the earlier draft, can be found here:

The document reflects an enormous amount of work from many people across 
sPHENIX, many many useful discussions, helpful information and advice from 
experts across the field, and impressive development of our ability to 
simulate sPHENIX quantitatively – backed by excellent test beam results.  The 
scientific collaboration worked closely project management to bring all this 
together, and I think we can all be very proud of the result.

At the same time, this is the first of many times we will be asked questions 
about the science of sPHENIX and how it can be addressed with a realizable 
detector.  This is all normal and good.  It’s when they stop asking questions 
that you should worry!   We made a lot of progress on many fronts in 
addressing this current charge – let’s build on that for the future.
