Dear Collaborators,
The biennial RHIC Science and Technology review concluded this afternoon. Every two years, DOE convenes a panel to evaluate the scientific, technical, and operational accomplishments of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD), the scientific collaborations, and the BNL groups that host the experiments. The panel also looks at how Lab management and C-AD and the collaborations have responded to recent challenges, are managing current activities, and are planning for future directions.
sPHENIX was a prominent part of the discussion at the review, beginning with ALD Berndt Mueller’s opening talk on the first morning.
On the second day, Gunther presented the sPHENIX science case and showed how it informed the detector capabilities we need. Ed detailed the structure of the sPHENIX project and showed how – through R&D, test beam activities, magnet testing, and a successful series of reviews – we are well prepared to move forward. These talks were expertly delivered and very well received. Of course, the talks are just the visible tip of the iceberg. They draw on the excellent progress being made by everyone in the Collaboration. Thanks to all for that hard work – let’s keep it going!
There was a brief close-out today, and Jim Sowinski (DOE/ONP) read through the panel’s draft comments and recommendations. Regarding sPHENIX, there were very positive statements about sPHENIX organization and progress. At the end of the close-out, Jehanne Simon-Gillo (DOE/ONP) noted that the next few years promised to be crazy, but exciting – and it was clear she was being both positive and encouraging.
The final report will take a bit of time to become available, but even in the preliminary form available at the close-out there were quite a number of statements that should put smiles on faces throughout the Collaboration,
Regards,
Dave
