Folks- I have been asked to submit an abstract for the instrumentation session of the International Conference on New Frontiers on Physics (ICNFP-2017). Below is my proposed abstract for a 20 minute talk . Submission deadline is April 15, conference is in late August. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Title: sPHENIX: A New Detector to Study the Quark-Gluon Plasma at the
Relativistic Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. A new detector, sPHENIX, is being proposed to explore the quark-gluon plasma properties through jets and heavy flavor measurements obtained from heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider,RHIC. The sPHENIX detector consists of the 1.5 T super conducting solenoid magnet formerly used for the BaBar experiment, charged particle tracking systems, electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, and a high-speed data-acquisition system capable of recording data at rates up to 15 KHz. In this talk, we will present the performance requirements and conceptual design of the calorimeters and tracking systems for the sPHENIX detector. In addition, performance results of prototypes of the proposed electromagnetic and hadronic detectors, as measured in beam tests at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility, will be shown. -- Eric J.
