It is indeed sad that we will no longer have the wise counsel, the gentlemanly manner, and the incisive intelligence of Satoshi Ozaki to draw on. He was indeed among the most accomplished physicists I have been privileged to work with, but as so many others have noted, he was a man who treated all his colleagues with respect, with concern, and with the same curiosity that drove his scientific accomplishments. He was a true leader of the RHIC project, leading not only the physicists, but the engineers and technicians as well on a multi-year effort to innovate and succeed in constructing an accelerator complex as well as four new experiments.
I came to know him as Sam's Deputy in the early PHENIX years, at a time when he could easily have decided that we couldn't afford PHENIX, that technical and financial challenges were just too much for a new accelerator complex coming on to build four brand new experiments as well. Satoshi never deviated from his support for striving to help make all the experiments succeed, and particularly for PHENIX be there on Day 1 at RHIC. PHENIX owes him a particular debt of gratitude for this support.

Dear collaborators,
It saddened me to learn of Satoshi Ozaki's death. I think everyone
knows that RHIC exists in large part thanks to Satoshi's wisdom and
untiring work as head of the project to design and build it. That would
be enough for most people, but in fact it's only a small part of what he
accomplished over his career. In addition, he was a genuinely nice and
funny person and I always enjoyed talking with him.

With great sadness, we learned Satoshi Ozaki passed away on Saturday,
July 22. In his long and distinguished career, Satoshi made leading
contributions to nuclear and particle physics and major facilities,
including TRISTAN, RHIC, NSLS-II. He will be dearly missed.
The family has arranged a service for those who wish to attend at the
Alexander Rothwell (formerly Alexander Tuthill) Funeral Home, 6447 Rt.
25A, in Wading River on Monday July 24th , between 1 to 2pm. Following
the service, there will be a private cremation.
Hong.
