Dear Colleague -
The RBRC Workshop on the Definition of Jets in a Large Background will be held June 25-27 at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  The registration deadline is May 15.  We would welcome your participation in this workshop and encourage you to register soon.  The web page is https://www.bnl.gov/jets18/
The goal of this workshop is to come to an agreement on the appropriate treatment of background for measurements of jets, both theoretically and experimentally.  Analogous to the Snowmass Accord, this workshop aims to identify what is necessary to compare theoretical calculations and experimental measurements.  These methods may be different for each observable, but they should facilitate comparison between theory and experiment for that observable.   The goal is to get involvement from the heavy ion, electron ion, and particle physics community.  Following the workshop, the findings will be summarized in a paper with workshop organizers, conveners, and participants as authors.
There will be three working groups.  The jet structure working group will focus on understanding the definition background and the impact of background subtraction techniques on measurements and theoretical calculations of jet structure observables.  The single jet observables will focus on understanding the definition of background and the impact of background subtraction techniques on measurements and theoretical calculations of single jet observables, such as jet spectra and azimuthal anisotropies of jets.  The correlations working group will focus on understanding the definition of background and impact of background subtraction techniques on measurements.  The working groups will discuss the relevant issues prior to the workshop and come up with a proposal to be presented and discussed at the workshop.
Thank you Megan Connors, Guilherme Milhano, Christine Nattrass, Rosi Reed, and Sevil Salur
