Hi all,

Here are my notes from the general meeting today.

Thanks,

Joe Osborn

Collaboration news from Dave Morrison
-Director's review finished. Positive review with a number of recommendations before OPA review
-Two meetings with ALD
-No changes to refining the charge for an updated EIC LOI from sPHENIX
-Additional ALD meeting included PHENIX and STAR and discussed run-18 plans as well as FY '19 budget
-Question: What is the plan from CAD between the BES physics running and sPHENIX? Some discussion that the current plan is only to have 1 year of no beam in 2022 for sPHENIX installation, with STAR receiving BES beam the previous years. However this is not entirely clear due to budget uncertainties.
-Collaboration meeting has been identified as June 5-6, 2018. A registration page will be sent around in the near future.

Discussion on several important topics from Gunther Roland
-Updated physics studies are needed for the OPA review which provide links between the physics goals and detector performance. Will need comparisons of MIE configuration (descoped) vs. full acceptance detector to discuss physics loss from descoped configuration.
-Charge from ALD for updated EIC LOI - No clarification of charge from ALD. Time line is still for a presentation at the June PAC, with a completed LOI by Fall '18.
-Realizing the MVTX - Encouraged to include MVTX in MIE (post OPA review) however need to identify alternative funding sources and solutions.
-Software and computing review - likely in June 2018 (6/11 or 6/18). Need to demonstrate our computing needs in the near and long term future.

Open discussion on each of these topics.
-Discussion on viability of NSF funding for the MVTX, perhaps a natural starting point for discussions on funding to previous institutional experience. We could try and encourage new collaborators to join who are already funded by the NSF, which may help make a case for future NSF funding.
-eRHIC LOI - ALD has only issued an explicit charge to sPHENIX. Co-spokespersons did have a discussion with ALD on non-sPHENIX collaboration. ALD did not object to this proposition.
-Software and computing review - Need to secure some agreement with RCF for future of sPHENIX computing. We need to put our stake down and say what we need in terms of computing resources as it will be significantly larger than what STAR/PHENIX need.

sPHENIX status from Ed O' Brien
-Successful director's review that concluded with several good suggestions on how to improve documentation and presentations for OPA review.
-Project is ready for CD1 and CD3a approval. OPA should be successful if attention is paid to how to present overviews such that interplay of MIE and non-MIE resources is clear.
-Several recommendations before OPA review, outlined in Ed's slides.

FNAL test beam update from Jin Huang
Jin showed an update of test beam activities and work. Good progress by EMCal and HCal groups. Will continue collecting data over the next several weeks. Analysis efforts are underway and Jin provided links to tutorials etc. for other collaborators to get started. TRacking team is setting up their INTT/MVTX/TPC apparatuses for a true "slice of sPHENIX" in the test beam setup.

Friends,

We'll have our general meeting at the usual time tomorrow. Main agenda items are slightly-longer-than-usual updates on collaboration and project, following recent discussions and this week's Director's Review:
