Dear collaborators,
At last Friday's general meeting (which had record attendance, btw!), we
discussed the hot-off-the-press news of DOE's announcement that the
electron-ion collider would be built at BNL. The announcement had
tumbled onto the scene the day before in an article in Newsday, in
Science, and elsewhere, and in an official press release from DOE. A
statement that caused some consternationthat appeared in some of the
newspaper articles – but did not appear in the DOE press release –
concerned the future of RHIC. The DOE undersecretary for science, Paul
Dabbard, was quoted variously as saying that RHIC would shut down in
2024 to make way for the EIC.
During Friday's meeting, we were already able to report that BNL ALD
Berndt Mueller had been in touch with DOE and had been told not to take
the 2024 date literally. We then met with Berndt on Monday to follow up
on this. He confirmed to us that nothing in BNL's plan regarding EIC
has changed – and that plan has three years of sPHENIX running in the
years 2023–2025. He also said that he would publicly confirm the
unchanged nature of BNL's plan in a number of forums. The first
confirmation appeared shortly after our Monday meeting in an "NPP
Update" email sent to all BNL NPP staff. This is a weekly communication
from the ALD to BNL employees in the Nuclear and Particle Physics
Directorate. He wrote:
"Our plan is to continue RHIC operations through FY25, including three
years of sPHENIX running beginning with the FY23 RHIC run."
Berndt told us he plans to repeat this statement at a regularly
scheduled NPP all-hands meeting next week and also in the upcoming RHIC
Bulletin (expected in February).
We'll keep an eye on this and keep the collaboration informed, but the
best strategy for realizing the full sPHENIX program is to continue
building on the fantastic progress and success we've demonstrated so
far. As always, we'll need to steadily refine, strengthen and broaden
our physics arguments – but that's been true since the very beginning.
The future for sPHENIX looks as bright as ever.
Cheers,
Dave and Gunther
