Dear Anabel and all

Nice job with the new EMCal paper and presentation at the general meeting. Please find my comments as following:

  • Suggest rewrite the first paragraph, e.g. “The super Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment (sPHENIX) is under construction at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to study the microscopic nature of strongly interacting matter ranging from nucleons to the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. sPHENIX is designed with a high precision tracking system, an electromagnetic (EM) and a hadronic calorimeter system with full azimuthal acceptance and pseudorapidity coverage of |eta|<1.1 which encloses the former BaBar superconducting magnet [7]. High-precision measurements of jets and heavy flavor observables will be performed over a wide range of nuclear collision systems.”
  • Line 43: … It also server as the first interaction length for the hadronic shower measurement.
  • Line 51: It would be easier to explain the geometry and the case of prototype with a 3D model of EMCal half sector.
  • Line 19: please double check the sampling fraction value based on the current simulation, which have changed when we switch from 1D to 2D SPACAL.
  • Line 167: The analog signal is digitized using a waveform analog-to-digital converter (ADC) sampling at approximately 60 MHz.
  • Line 212+ : please double check the Geant4 and physics list version used in your simulation sample, which is saved in each cout logs. The default macro loads 4.10.02-patch-02 QGSP_BERT. In that case suggest change to
    -> “… version 4.10.02-patch-02 with physics list of QGSP_BERT”.
  • Line 258: “A preliminary calibration of the data, which we call the shower calibration, was performed based on how the electromagnetic showers develop within the EMCal.”
    -> “At the first step, a tower-by-tower energy scale calibration is performed so that the average 5x5 cluster energy for 8 GeV electron beam indenting at the center of each tower is reconstructed to the beam energy. Next, a uniformity study….”
  • Paragraph 280: here we could explain the hodoscope method would corresponding to correct electron shower energy with tracking position in sPHENIX, while the cluster position-based correction would be used for photon cluster energy correction in sPHENIX.
  • To echo the last sentence, the EMCal requirement probably should be mentioned in the introduction section.

Also a few further minor comments:

  • Line 1 & 21: “sPHENIX is a future experiment”
    -> “sPHENIX is a new experiment currently under construction”
  • Line 4, etc. define 2D and 1D at first uses.
  • Line 22 : define RHIC here.
  • Line 44: 0<phi<2pi
    -> full azimuth
  • Line 203: “a horizontal and a vertical hodoscope finger”
    -> “a horizontal and a vertical hodoscope channel number”
  • Line 207: “suppress particles traveling outside the beam position.”
    -> “suppress particles traveling outside the acceptance of the hodoscope.”
  • Line 292: -> “64 possible positions bins
  • Line 299: “the beam was colimated”
    -> “ the beam profile has a width of one to few cm. ”
  • Line 320 & Fig 8 title & 371: “using a 2.5x2.5 cm^2 hodoscope aperture cut roughly covering one tower
  • Line 339: -> “arise from the reduced cluster position resolution at the lower energy end”

I will be looking forward to the next iteration of the manuscript and the submission hopefully soon.

Cheers

Jin

Subject: [Sphenix-l] First circulation of 2018 EMCal testbeam paper

Dear sPHENIX collaborators,

Attached is a draft of the 2018 EMCal testbeam paper for your review. The target journal is IEEE TNS. The paper includes a draft author list. The spokespeople will inform the collaboration on the procedure for finalizing the author list. We would greatly appreciate any comments, if they could be submitted by the end of the day on February 18.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the EMCal v2.1 testbeam efforts!

Best,

Anabel on behalf of the EMCal testbeam team
