Dear All:
Earlier this year I informed BNL Lab Director Doon Gibbs of my intention to step down from the position of Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Nuclear and Particle Physics at the end of the 2020 calendar year. In response, Doon Gibbs has appointed a search committee to identify a suitable successor. (See his Brookhaven Announcement below)
Much has been achieved since I started in this position in January 2013: RHIC has had a string of phenomenal runs, both with heavy ions and polarized protons, that already led to important new insights into the physics of the quark-gluon plasma and the dynamics of spin in QCD, with more to come from the data on tape. A unique set of additional measurements is planned for the next five years, which will consolidate the unrivalled legacy of RHIC as the most versatile particle collider ever built and operated. Just this year, we also succeeded in bringing the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to BNL, which will extend life of the existing infrastructure of the RHIC/AGS complex for another three decades and open up a completely new field of research in QCD as the most powerful electron microscope ever constructed, capable of mapping the quark-gluon structure of protons and heavier nuclei in exquisite detail, exploring the physics of dense gluon fields and unravelling the mysteries of proton spin and mass. We also have a high energy physics program that is well set to pursue the search for new physics at the high-luminosity LHC and the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment.
This is an ideal moment to search for and attract the next person who can lead nuclear and particle physics at BNL over the next decade into the era of the EIC. While many challenges will surely lie ahead, the position of the directorate is exceptionally strong and tremendous scientific opportunities, in the short term at RHIC and in the long term at the EIC, beckon.
On a personal note, I tremendously enjoyed the many interactions with the RHIC/AGS users community over the past eight years including the annual users meetings, which were the among the highlights of my experience at BNL. I am happy in knowing that the RHIC/AGS users community is strong and vibrant as is the growing EIC users community. If you have suggestions who might be good candidates for my successor as ALD, please, bring those to the attention of the search committee.
Berndt Mueller

Organizational Announcement: Nuclear and Particle Physics Directorate
I'm sad to announce today the intention of Berndt Mueller to step down as Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Nuclear and Particle Physics (NPP) on Jan. 1, 2021. At the same time, I am happy that this step will enable him to return to his previous life as a university professor at Duke University after nearly 10 impactful years at Brookhaven.
As ALD, Berndt has made enormous contributions to the Laboratory as a science leader, not only to our nuclear and high energy physics programs, but also in shaping the broader science and operations of the Laboratory. In this role, he shepherded the remarkable performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over a decade, including driving the emergence of the isotope program, and played a leadership role in our long-term effort to host the Electron-Ion Collider. He also shaped our high energy physics program in important ways and contributed to its synergy with the nuclear physics programs. On the operations side, he made significant contributions in our efforts to improve our safety performance and increase our awareness and performance with respect to inclusion, diversity, and equity.
The role of ALD for NPP is one of the most challenging leadership jobs at the Laboratory. I am grateful for Berndt's many thoughtful recommendations, his perseverance in the face of what were often difficult circumstances, and especially his eloquent descriptions of the science we are doing and why it is important to our nation and the world. Please join me in giving him our warm thanks and best wishes on this next phase of his career. We will miss him.
With Berndt's decision, we have started a search for the next ALD for NPP. The short and long job descriptions can be found on the NPP homepage (https://www.bnl.gov/npp/ALD.php) and the BNL Careers site (https://jobs.bnl.gov/job/upton/associate-laboratory-director-nuclear-and-particle-physics/3437/17078874), respectively. A search committee has been empaneled and includes Young-Kee Kim (University of Chicago) and Bill Zajc (Columbia University) as co-chairs. They will be joined by Christine Aidala, (Physics Department, University of Michigan); Gabriella Carini (Instrumentation Division, Brookhaven), Steve Coleman (Environment, Safety, and Health Directorate, Brookhaven); Christel Colón (Human Resources Directorate, Brookhaven); Wolfram Fischer (Collider-Accelerator Department, Brookhaven); John Hill (National Synchrotron Light Source II, Brookhaven); and Marc Andre Pleier and Lijuan Ruan (both Physics Department, Brookhaven).
If you have suggestions of possible candidates, or wish to submit comments to the Search Committee, please send them to ccolon AT bnl.gov, or speak directly to a member of the committee. You can also send comments and suggestions to me or to Bob Tribble.
