Dear colleagues:

 

As many of you have learned by now that we had a major setback with RHIC Run 2023 due to the failure of the RHIC building 1004B valve box that happened yesterday, August 1. As a result, RHIC is down. We will assess the repair situation in about a week when it is safe to open the valve box. 

 

I know you are all concerned about the RHIC run which I understand fully. I would like to give a shout-out to all of you for the incredible job you are doing and the impressive progress you have made with this run. Run 2023 has been extremely challenging in many ways, especially with the hot weather. I would like to assure you that we are fully committed to completing the RHIC science mission as highlighted in the 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan. Today is the first working day of our new Laboratory Director, JoAnne Hewett. JoAnne was just on a call with Jack Anderson, and several of us from NPP to discuss the RHIC situation a couple of hours ago. She will meet with us to discuss again tomorrow. We have communicated with the DOE, Office of Nuclear Physics (ONP) about what happened, and we have their strong support as well. We are working diligently and expeditiously with input from the sPHENIX and STAR Collaboration leadership, and in consultation with ONP on determining the best path forward. We will keep you informed as that path becomes clear. Please keep up your great work and your high spirit.
