Hi Juniors, cc sPHENIX-l.
Now that the QM rush is over and we are all back safely at our home institutions, this is a good time to reassess sPHENIX Juniors needs.
QM was also a good forum to chat with more senior collaborators. Based on that conversion, I became aware of their desire to get their new students up to speed with sPHENIX software.
This made me realize it has been a long time since we hosted a software tutorial. Not only that, I recalled that during my days of being a ALICE Junior committee member, we also hosted so called Juniors' day.
This was a one day event where Juniors volunteer to give a 5-10 minutes talk about their research- motivation, analysis progress, and software requirements to complete their analysis.
This is something we never implemented in sPHENIX (understandably because we had no data). Nonetheless, presentations on purely simulation also fit nicely into this event. The benefit of this event is that this is a relaxed event with only Juniors in attendance and it allows for Juniors to gain more experience in communicating their research. This is something that the presenter can also add to their CV.
For the software tutorial, I imagine invitations to sPHENIX software experts in the following areas:
- Calorimeters
- Jet reconstruction
- Global detectors
- Tracking
- sPHENIX macros/modules/environment setup
- Data and Simulation files access
- DAQ
A doodle poll to survey the availability of Juniors for this event can be found here:
I imagine a 2-day back-to-back event (day 1: software tutorial; day 2: Juniors' day- 5-10 minute presentation of your research to fellow Juniors). The software tutorial is open to all, however the Juniors' day is reserved for Juniors only.
There is also a need for a Junior co-chair. If you are interested in helping out with this position, please email me: ejironaomiumaka AT gmail.com. Once we gain critical mass on the number of candidates we will run an election.
I cc'd the main sPHENIX mailing list in case we have new juniors who are not yet registered to the sPHENIX Junior mailing list. Please register here:
Best regards,
Ejiro Umaka (on behalf of sPHENIX Juniors Reps to the EC)
