sPHENIX Forward Detectors and Physics
sPHENIX is a newly built RHIC detector designed to study properties of the QCD matter with flow measurements, jets, and heavy quarks. To this end, sPHENIX is equipped with extended acceptance detectors— a pair of zero degree calorimeters, minimum bias detectors and event plane detectors in addition to mid-rapidity tracking and calorimetric detectors, which allows for improved event plane and triggering capabilities. sPHENIX began taking Au+Au data at 200 GeV in May 2023 primarily to commission the brand new detector.
This talk will describe sPHENIX forward detectors and physics capabilities— in addition to their role in providing event characterization, these detectors in conjunction with mid rapidity detectors will be used to study soft and cold QCD physics. Finally, I will discuss the first results of these detectors using Run 2023 commissioning data.
