Organizational Announcement: Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear and
Particle Physics

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that Haiyan Gao, who has served as
Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Nuclear and Particle Physics since
June 2021, will be leaving the Laboratory and returning to Duke University
full time, effective June 30, 2024. Haiyan has been a key member of the Lab's
leadership team since her arrival, and her knowledge, insight, and
collaborative nature will be sorely missed.

Abhay Deshpande, currently director of Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) science at
Brookhaven and founding director of the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear
Science (CFNS) at Stony Brook University, has agreed to serve as interim ALD
- effective July 1, 2024 - while we conduct an international search for
Haiyan's replacement. We will share more information on that search process
when it is available.

Abhay is a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the department of Physics and
Astronomy at Stony Brook University. Abhay studies the quark-gluon structure
and dynamics inside the protons and nuclei to understand Quantum
Chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions within the Standard Model
of physics. He also uses precision probes to explore the limits of the
Standard Model of physics and search for effects beyond it. Abhay has been
involved in and led nuclear/particle physics experiments at Brookhaven as
well as at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), DESY (Hamburg, Germany), Jefferson
Laboratory (Newport News, Virginia), and PSI (Zurich, Switzerland). He was
one of the earliest proponents of the EIC (since the late 1990s) and has been
a leader in developing EIC science, making the case for it, and initiating
and organizing the users community and detector collaborations around the
project.

During her time at Brookhaven, Haiyan oversaw two runs at the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider; the construction, installation, and commissioning of the
sPHENIX detector; and the expansion of the Lab's isotope research and
production capabilities—all while enabling significant progress on the EIC
project. She proved to be a responsive, caring leader whose contributions to
the Lab's success went well beyond her immediate responsibilities. I hope you
will join me in wishing her the best in her future endeavors and in
supporting Abhay in this key interim position.
