Dear sPHENIX collaborators,

Good news, everyone!  We just received the email below from ALD Abhay Deshpande announcing a two-week extension to Run-24.  We'll plan to discuss this in a bit more detail at tomorrow's sPHENIX general meeting.

Regards,
Dave and Gunther

Dear Colleagues,

sPHENIX and STAR Collaborations are taking data with almost their full capabilities. RHIC is operating stably. It is now critical to enable both experiments to maximize their [(L) and (P2L)] with proton-proton collisions.  After discussing this with DOE/NPP, BNL management and getting input from the experiments and the PAC, I have decided to extend Run 24 by TWO WEEKS – both for proton-proton running. Instead of October 7, Run-24 will end on October 21. The last three weeks of Run-24 will be Au-Au collisions – as planned earlier.

The two extra weeks will come out of the next year’s Run-25 cryo-operations. We have been given operational guidance of 22 week run for Run 25 so far, but we will only know the exact length after the FY25 budgets are finalized. Without knowing the length of the Run 25 that budgets will allow, I am unwilling to take the risk of taking more weeks away from it to extend Run-24. At the same time, I am convinced that with the additional two weeks with the fully operational TPC in sPHENIX, along with its streaming readout and flawless operation of STAR with polarized protons, will go a long way in solidifying the prospects of impactful and exciting results from both experiments in this run, and that these data will also serve the experiments well for comparison with Au-Au operation next year.

I want to thank all those within NPP (C-AD and PO) who support RHIC operations:  RHIC operational extensions indeed is an extra burden on you and without your support we can never accomplish the science. I think I can speak for all who will benefit from this in their research that they appreciate your effort very much.

Cheers, Abhay
