Subject: Weekly NPP Update 04212026
Hello NPP:
NPP weekly update (April 21st, 2025)
Nuclear and Particle Physics
Hello NPP: The weather on the weekend was beautiful, my wife and I decided to go for a long afternoon walk. A perfect afternoon around the waters of the north shore followed by a dinner with friends. Hope you too had a great weekend with friends and/or families. On work front: Details of FY25 budget are still trickling down. There is no further guidance on FY26 yet. I expect to hear about President’s budget numbers in late May or June. On April 14, Donny Hornback, DDST John Hill and I visited DOE office of Nuclear Physics to inform them about the HEET initiative. They found the initiative interesting, and encouraged us to explore further details. Donny and Kevin Brown will follow up on this. The following day, directors of nuclear physics Laboratories: Kim Sawyer (Jefferson Lab), Thomas Glaschmaker (FRIB), and myself (standing in for JoAnne Hewette, BNL) and the DNP Chair, Prof. James Napolitano (Temple U.) visited the Hill to emphasize the importance of sufficient funding for NP in FY26. Representatives from Battelle accompanied us. We met with Staffers from the Senate and House approciations committee, and with the Chief of Staff for acting Director of Office of Science. They all appreciated a chance to talk to us, and in the end assured us of their strong desire to support nuclear physics research and the National Labs. It was very satisfying to see how keenly aware they were of the transition from RHIC to EIC at BNL and the special challenges involved for BNL this year.
Safety First: Last week there was an event where technicians were loading a lab pickup truck and a steel pipe moved forward and broke the cabs rear window, bypassing the bed guard. There were no injuries, and the truck was brought to the motor pool. Small events such as this can indicate an inattention to detail. Please be aware of your surroundings, including other work in your area. The Safety group continues to be involved in the Blue Ring Dipole Repair work. This is a very intricate repair, involving many groups working in close quarters. When something unexpected arises, please pause, assess the situation and speak to supervion and the work control coordinator before proceeding. Though it may seem like you save five minutes now, a mistake can cost hours later.
News from C-AD and preparation for Run 25: Our CAD folks are hard at work to get to the access point for finally diagnosing and fixing the current problem in RHIC. They expect to open the electrical connections boxes with the suspected short during the day today (4/21) and will be able to start the repairs soon, which could last for a week or so. The present schedule has the machine cold at 4K, tested and ready to resume setup at 5/22/25. As we get more news, I will update you. At this point it looks likely that the planned break during the summer may be shortened or eliminated.
News from Experiments sPHENIX and STAR: The experiments are ready and eager to take data.
News from High Energy Physics: 3rd FCCee workshop progressed at Fermilab and Argonne last week. Progress toward realization of FCCee, including submissions to the European strategy update was discussed. The talks are available at https://indico.fnal.gov/event/67484/
News from Isotope Program: Target transfer is planned today (4/21) Monday and we plan to start of the next irradiation. Processing and dispensing will be done at the RRPL. Waste preparation ongoing in AP hot cells. IBC removal this week by waste management. Work continues on 2-66C hot cell ventilation. HVAC work continues at the cyclotron. Access control group continues work on machine protection relay installation.
